![]() If you're here, you're already some of my favorite people. You don't need funny bar signs, you're a sea person. You don't need inspiration, you've had it ground into by the turn of the wind or the coming back to life sputter of a diesel. You've prayed hard and lived harder than most. You laugh at Harley riders ( unless you have one of those too...) The is a storm image from a no name storm that came up one afternoon. I was at anchor on my 30 ft. custom motor sailor, the TikiMama. I'd been harassed by some lovely locals ( they don't mention THIS in those cruising magazines!)...and found some beautiful karma that day as this man who had tried to cut my anchor line while I was asleep ( did I mention LOVELY?)...well,his dinghy sailed right by me. Both of them. If this picture in and of itself doesn't say to you there's a higher power, this small story should. Meantime, I'm on the gunwale trying to add another line to my dinghy. It's bouncing like a lowrider at a car show in LA. I manage. Feel tough. Then notice my pug Jada had managed to get on top of the roof of the pilot house and was pooping balanced on three legs. No problem. So...who's the sea dog? ![]() Well, I'm not the sea dog. But here I am pictured next to the old C&C shark the Tiki Man and I used as a camper boat. It is sinking. This is the first boat I've ever sunk. We got hit by a rogue wave that knocked up on the beach 10 feet -- and down on a 4 foot fixed fin keel in something like 3 foot of water. There's some unfortunate math for you. But I learned a lot about a sinking boat. Sinking isn't an immediate thing. Often in the days of keeping the 30 gallons an hour coming in her pumped out, Tiki Man and I would have these great conversations on the difference between SINKING and LEAKING. Even looking back...she was sinking. Now she's in Key West with the Tiki Man with a broken mast from a moderate storm that left him a bit adrift. She was swamped. I never liked that boat. The day we got her, she marooned us at a McDonald's for 3 days. But...that's another story. It is important to mention the name of the boat was the Dire Straights. Another lesson - naming is destiny...create accordingly. One time that boat came off anchor and the Coast Guard returned her like a bad dog on a leash. To the signs! |
